Fibroids are noncancerous tumours that affect several layers of the uterus. These tumours develop from the smooth muscles of the uterus, hence the name "leiomyoma." They are not malignant and can occur as a single isolated tumour or as a cluster of tumours of varied sizes and locations. The likelihood of developing a malignant uterine tumour is less than 0.5%, and it is possible that it is much lower. When fibroids get larger than their blood supply, sections of the fibroid can die, resulting in the formation of calcifications. These calcifications lead the fibroid to harden and become a calcified fibroid. 4 Fibroid calcification, on the other hand, is more common in older or menopausal women. |
